Surfing in Siargao

In the mood for adventure? Head down to the beach.

Siargao is home to the best surfing in the Philippines. Surfers have been making the pilgrimage to Siargao for decades to test their skill at Cloud 9, which is ranked as one of the top 10 waves in the world. What lots of travelers don’t know is that there are many high quality Siargao surf breaks — you just have to know where to find them. Siargao has 27 km of coastline that’s exposed to swell.

Surfing took the world by storm in the 1970s, but nobody knew about the waves in Siargao then. It wasn’t until the start of the early 80s that nomadic surfers took a chance on the Philippines to escape the fast-developing surf mecca of Bali, Indonesia. Those who knew where to look had found surfing’s pot of gold in a barreling right-hander known today as Cloud 9. Then in 1992, a famous surf photographer by the name of John Callahan visited, documented, and published photos of the waves in an American surfer magazine. It didn’t take long for the world to come knocking at Siargao’s door with hopes of surfing her perfect waves.

ACTIVITIES SIARGAO

Visitors come from across the globe to experience the world-class surf, white sand beaches, beautiful sunsets, natural rock and cave pools, and smaller neighboring islands. There is something here for every kind of traveler, whether you are looking for excitement or relaxation.

Cloud 9 surfing area and boardwalk

The most popular attraction on Siargao Island is the Cloud 9 surfing area in General Luna. It is actually one of the most well-known surfing spots in the entire Philippines, as the right-breaking reef creates a barrelling wave known for its thick, hollow tubes. A surfing competition sponsored by the government of Surigao del Norte is held here every year. Cloud 9 is only recommended for advanced surfers, as it breaks on a very shallow reef. It is also best to come at mid to high tide, as low tide exposes most of the reef.

Magpupungko Rock Pools

Just a 50-minute drive from General Luna, Magpupungko Rock Pools is one of the most popular tourist attractions on Siargao Island. These natural pools are created from water left behind in a coastal rock formation when the ocean retreats at low tide. The water in the pools is bright blue and incredibly clear, making it a popular spot to take a swim and go snorkeling. You’ll have the opportunity to watch a wide variety of fish and other marine life under the surface. The water is also deep enough to allow for cliff jumping off the surrounding rock formations.

Pacifico Surf

Pacifico Surf

Pacifico is a wave most visitors of Siargao won’t get to see. Many don’t know about it because everybody is focused on the fame of Cloud 9, but a one hour trip to the north-east of the island can be worth it in the right conditions.

While on small days you will find a mellow longboard wave here, the wave turns into a barrel spitting beast when it gets bigger. The peaks are very consistent and you can get very long barrels here if commit to paddle in. The drop is steep, powerful and full concentration is needed to ride this beast on big days. Plenty of awesome places to stay at in the area and you can stop at Magpupungko Pool at Pilar on the way and relax or keep cruising to Taktak Waterfall to avoid the blasting noon sun in fresh water.
